United States: Rapper Jay-Z has revealed that his long-running rivalry with fellow hip-hop artist Nas began after Nas failed to attend a scheduled studio session, describing the incident as an early source of tension between the two artists.
Speaking in the latest episode of the JAŸ-Z in 8 docuseries, which aired on October 9, Jay-Z recalled that the missed session affected his willingness to collaborate with Nas again.
“He just never showed up to the studio,” Jay-Z said, explaining that he decided not to ask Nas to work with him again.
The rivalry intensified after Jay-Z perceived certain lyrics on Nas’ second album as indirect criticism of him, eventually leading to one of hip-hop’s most prominent lyrical feuds.
What Triggered the Rivalry Between Jay-Z and Nas?
Jay-Z said the feud became personal but did not involve physical violence, describing it primarily as a competitive clash between two artists establishing themselves in the 1990s hip-hop scene.
“It got personal, but it wasn’t really personal,” he said, adding that the two have since become “really good friends.”
How Did the Feud Influence Their Music Careers?
Jay-Z credited the rivalry with motivating both artists to improve their performances, praising Nas for rising to the challenge during their lyrical exchanges.
Jay-Z also said the competition helped him remain focused during the The Blueprint 2 era, when he was enjoying commercial success, selling millions of records and touring extensively.
The two artists eventually reconciled and collaborated on DJ Khaled’s 2022 track Sorry Not Sorry. Khaled previously revealed that seeing the rappers enjoying each other’s company at a dinner encouraged him to bring them together for the collaboration.
