Australia: The withdrawal of a planned $5 billion initial public offering (IPO) by Nvidia-backed data centre operator Firmus has dealt a setback to Australia’s capital markets, where investors are concerned about a declining number of listed companies and a weak pipeline of new listings, Reuters reported on October 9, 2026.

Firmus withdrew its listing plans on Friday, citing market volatility and prevailing conditions, and said it would pursue private fundraising instead. The proposed IPO would have been the fourth-largest public offering globally so far this year and the second-largest listing in the history of the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

Why Was Firmus’ IPO Considered Significant?

The planned offering was expected to introduce a major technology company to a market dominated by Australia’s Big Four banks and large mining companies. Investors had hoped the listing would broaden investment opportunities and improve the appeal of the Australian share market.

At $5 billion, the offering would have ranked behind SpaceX, CXMT Corp and Cerebras Systems among the world’s largest public offerings of 2026, according to Dealogic data cited by Reuters.

How Is Australia’s IPO Market Performing?

Australia recorded $1.37 billion in new share sales during the first nine months of 2026, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. Although this was the highest amount for the same period since 2021, it remained significantly below activity on some competing exchanges.

Hong Kong recorded 118 company listings, raising approximately $50 billion through IPOs during the same period, according to data from the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Why Is the ASX Losing Listed Companies?

The Australian Securities Exchange has faced a sustained decline in listed companies, partly due to privatisations and takeovers that have removed businesses from public markets. The number of companies listed on the ASX stood at 1,891 in September 2026, compared with 2,066 in 2016, according to exchange data.

Jamie Hannah, deputy head of investments and capital markets at VanEck Australia, said Firmus’ withdrawal was a setback for market diversity and reduced the prospect of a major new listing.

What Does the Withdrawal Mean for Market Diversity?

Investors have raised concerns that the Australian market remains heavily concentrated in financial services and resources, particularly major banks and mining companies such as BHP and Rio Tinto. The absence of a significant technology listing limits opportunities to diversify portfolios across different industries.

Oscar Oberg, lead portfolio manager at Wilson Asset Management, which has invested in Firmus, described the collapse as disappointing for the market, particularly given the prolonged shortage of major IPOs.

Meanwhile, London-listed mining company Glencore is expected to begin trading on the ASX on October 14, potentially adding to the market’s already substantial exposure to the resources sector.
