Tesla Moves Toward Fully Driverless Cybercab With No Steering Wheel or Pedals

Tesla has stepped up its push into autonomous transportation, offering limited free rides in its Cybercab robotaxi in parts of Austin, Texas, as the company moves closer to deploying vehicles designed to operate without a human driver.

The electric vehicle maker announced the rides on Thursday, September 3, following an invite-only event in Austin. Tesla promoted the vehicle on X with the message “no steering wheel, no pedals,” highlighting its departure from conventional vehicle controls.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk amplified the announcement, pinning the company’s post and describing the rollout as “A storm of Cybercabs.”

Limited Austin Deployment Puts Tesla’s Robotaxi Strategy to the Test

The Cybercab is a two-seat autonomous vehicle featuring butterfly doors and a distinctive golden exterior. Tesla has said the vehicle is designed without a steering wheel or pedals, although details on fares, operating routes and the scale of the initial service remain limited.

The company has also updated its robotaxi portal to indicate that Cybercab rides are currently restricted to selected areas of Austin. Videos of the vehicles operating on city streets have circulated online, generating significant attention among Tesla supporters and investors.

Tesla’s latest move follows years of development of autonomous driving technology. The company currently markets Full Self-Driving (Supervised), which still requires a human driver to remain attentive and capable of taking control.

The Cybercab was first unveiled in October 2024 at Tesla’s “We, Robot” event, where Musk presented the vehicle as part of the company’s longer-term autonomous transportation strategy.

Tesla Shares Rise as Investors Watch Autonomous Rollout

Tesla’s latest robotaxi announcement immediately drew investor attention. The company’s shares gained 5.4% during regular trading on Thursday, reflecting market interest in the potential commercial impact of autonomous vehicles.

Analysts, including Wall Street analyst Pierre Ferragu, have commented on the rollout as footage of Cybercabs operating in Austin continues to circulate online.

Tesla is also testing autonomous vehicles through a fleet that includes Model Ys. More than 200 Tesla vehicles in the United States are reportedly registered as “unsupervised,” indicating that they are intended to operate without a human behind the wheel within designated, geofenced areas, according to an independent third-party robotaxi tracking portal.

The Austin deployment represents an important test for Tesla’s autonomous-driving ambitions. While the company has yet to disclose the full commercial model for Cybercab services, the limited rollout provides an early indication of how Tesla intends to transition from driver-assisted vehicles to a fully autonomous robotaxi network.
