Joe Biden’s Cancer Has Progressed, Son Hunter Says

WASHINGTON: Former US President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has progressed beyond his bones and is causing severe pain, his son Hunter Biden said in an interview, offering an update on the former president’s health.

Speaking to the BBC’s Newsnight, Hunter Biden said the disease had advanced further and described his father’s condition as physically debilitating.

“The cancer has spread, metastasised into his bones and further,” Hunter Biden said. “It’s very painful, and it’s very debilitating in many respects.”

A spokesperson for the 83-year-old former president declined to comment on the interview.

Biden Continues Treatment for Aggressive Prostate Cancer

Joe Biden announced in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had already spread to his bones, less than four months after leaving office.

Since the diagnosis, he has undergone radiation and hormone therapy. Last month, while announcing the release of his forthcoming memoir, Biden said his treatment was progressing well.

Hunter Biden said it had been difficult for the family to watch the former president cope with the illness but added that his father remained engaged and committed to public life.

Health Remains in Focus After Presidency

Biden’s health drew sustained public attention during his presidency, particularly following his performance in the June 2024 presidential debate, after which he withdrew from the election campaign.

Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee but was defeated by Donald Trump in the November 2024 election.

Biden served as the 46th president of the United States from 2021 to 2025 after previously serving as vice president under Barack Obama between 2009 and 2017.

Despite his illness, the former president has continued making public appearances, including attending the dedication of Obama’s presidential library in Chicago in June. His memoir is scheduled for publication on November 17.
