Near-Record Low Danube Water Levels Disrupt Tourism and River Cruises

Hungary: Near-record low water levels on the Danube River have disrupted tourism in Hungary, leaving cruise vessels stranded, suspending sightseeing trips, and affecting one of the country’s most important tourism sectors. According to Hungary’s Water Authority, the Danube’s water level in Budapest fell to within eight centimetres of the record low recorded eight years ago, although officials expect water levels to rise next week.

Why Are Low Water Levels Disrupting Tourism on the Danube?

The exceptionally low water levels have forced several river cruise vessels to remain stranded or delayed at ports, while sightseeing tours north of Budapest have been suspended. Hungarian river operator MAHART-PassNave said bookings have fallen by 18% in July due to cancellations, with international river cruises, carrying around 600,000 passengers annually—among the worst affected.

What Is Causing the Danube’s Water Levels to Fall?

Industry officials say the decline reflects a longer-term trend of increasingly frequent low water levels linked to prolonged dry conditions. Despite efforts by shipping companies and ports to adapt, river levels are increasingly falling below operational limits, disrupting navigation and tourism. River cruise operator Avalon Waterways has also cancelled several upcoming departures on the Danube and Rhine because of the low water levels.
