Algae Bloom and Peeling Liner Hit Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Weeks After $14.7m Renovation

WASHINGTON: The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., is facing mounting problems less than two weeks after completing a $14.7 million renovation, with green algae spreading across the water and sections of the newly installed blue liner beginning to peel.

The renovation, ordered by US President Donald Trump ahead of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, included repainting the pool’s base in “American Flag Blue” and installing a new waterproof liner. However, the project has come under scrutiny after visible algae blooms and deterioration appeared shortly after reopening. (Reuters)

    What Problems Have Emerged?

National Park Service workers have been deployed to remove algae using skimmers and have added hydrogen peroxide to the water in an effort to control the bloom. Despite these measures, algae has continued to spread, turning much of the pool green and obscuring the blue surface beneath.

In addition to the algae, sections of the pool’s blue liner have begun peeling, raising questions about the durability and quality of the recently completed renovation.

Why Is the Project Facing Criticism?

The renovation was carried out under a no-bid contract awarded to Atlantic Industrial Coatings as part of a broader redevelopment initiative for Washington. The rapid emergence of algae and damage to the liner has prompted criticism from visitors and renewed scrutiny over the project’s execution and value for money.

Neither the National Park Service nor the contractor had publicly commented on the reported defects at the time of the Reuters report.

    What Happens Next?

Maintenance crews continue efforts to control the algae and preserve the newly renovated landmark as officials assess the extent of the damage. The Reflecting Pool remains one of Washington’s most visited monuments and a focal point for national events and commemorations.
