Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for $15 Million Over Alleged Unauthorized Use of Image in TV Marketing

British pop star Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, seeking at least $15 million in damages over allegations that the company used her image without permission in marketing its television products.

The lawsuit, filed on Friday in a California federal court, accuses Samsung of featuring a copyrighted image of Lipa on retail packaging for its TV sets, implying an endorsement of the product without her consent.

According to court filings, the image in question—titled “Dua Lipa — Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024”—is owned by Lipa, who holds all rights, title, and interest in the photograph. The complaint argues that its use on product packaging created the false impression of her affiliation with or approval of the brand.

Lipa’s legal team alleges that Samsung’s actions constitute copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violation of publicity rights. The filing further claims the use of her image has diluted her brand identity and commercial value by misleading consumers into believing she endorsed the product.

Screenshots included in the lawsuit reportedly show social media users associating the singer with the television product, with some stating they would purchase the device because of her presence on the packaging.

The complaint states that Lipa became aware of the alleged misuse in June last year and subsequently demanded that Samsung cease using her image. However, her lawyers claim the company continued the practice.

Samsung Electronics declined to comment on the case, citing ongoing litigation. Representatives for Dua Lipa have not issued further public statements regarding the lawsuit.

The case adds to growing legal scrutiny over the use of celebrity likenesses in advertising and product marketing without explicit consent.
