Amazon has deepened its investment in AI startup Anthropic, injecting an additional $5 billion as part of an expanding strategic partnership centered on artificial intelligence infrastructure and model development.
The latest funding builds on Amazon’s earlier investment of $8 billion in the San Francisco-based company. According to both firms, Amazon may increase its total investment to as much as $20 billion, subject to Anthropic meeting specified performance benchmarks.
Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI model, has also committed to spending more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next decade to support large-scale AI computing needs. The company says the agreement is aimed at expanding computing capacity required for rapidly growing demand in generative AI.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the partnership would help accelerate AI research and deployment, noting the importance of scaling infrastructure alongside model development. The company recently reported a sharp rise in annualized revenue, surpassing $30 billion after a significant quarterly increase.
The collaboration comes amid heightened policy scrutiny in the United States over advanced AI systems. Earlier tensions emerged between Anthropic and the US administration over the use of its technology in defense applications, including concerns related to surveillance and autonomous weapons.
Despite earlier disputes, recent meetings between Anthropic leadership and US officials indicated renewed dialogue on responsible AI deployment and governance frameworks.
Separately, Anthropic recently introduced a new AI model, “Mythos,” which has not been publicly released due to cybersecurity risk concerns.
