US forces positioned mobile missile launchers at their largest military base in the Middle East as tensions with Iran escalated earlier this year, according to a Reuters analysis of satellite imagery.
The images show that American troops at Al Udeid Air Base mounted Patriot air defence missiles on mobile truck launchers, allowing the systems to be moved more rapidly than fixed installations. The changes were visible in satellite photographs taken in early February compared with images from mid-January.
Military analysts cited by Reuters said the use of mobile launchers increases flexibility and survivability, enabling US forces to reposition missile defences quickly in response to potential threats.
The deployment coincided with rising friction between Washington and Tehran, marked by US warnings of possible military action and concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missile capabilities and regional influence, even as diplomatic efforts continued to prevent a wider conflict.
Reuters’ satellite analysis also indicated a broader build-up of US military assets across the region. Increased aircraft activity and additional equipment were observed at bases in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the British-controlled Diego Garcia, underscoring heightened US readiness.
It was not immediately clear whether the Patriot missile systems remained mounted on the mobile trucks at the time of the most recent imagery. The US Department of Defense did not respond to requests for comment, Reuters said.
The satellite images also showed heightened Iranian military activity. According to Reuters, Iran’s drone carrier IRIS Shahid Bagheri was seen near the port city of Bandar Abbas on multiple occasions, highlighting Tehran’s parallel military posture.
Analysts told Reuters that the US decision to make its missile defences more mobile reflects growing concern among American commanders about the vulnerability of US bases in the event of a confrontation, even as both sides continue to pursue diplomatic channels.
