US and Iran exchange heavy strikes as conflict intensifies across Gulf

Middle East: The United States and Iran exchanged heavy missile and drone attacks on Sunday, with Iran targeting US military facilities across Gulf states while Washington launched a new wave of airstrikes against Iranian military targets. The escalation marks one of the most intense phases of the conflict since the war began earlier this year.

    How has Iran responded?

Iran claimed it had again closed the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the United States of destabilising the region and warning that maritime transit would remain suspended until security conditions improve. Tehran also launched missile and drone attacks targeting US-linked facilities in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, and support infrastructure associated with US forces in the region.

What action has the United States taken?

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it launched additional strikes against Iranian military assets, saying the operations were intended to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and civilian maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. US forces also intercepted Iranian missiles and drones during the attacks.

What is the status of the Strait of Hormuz?

Iran announced that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz had been suspended, stating that passage would resume only after regional stability is restored. The United States rejected Iran’s claim of control over the waterway, maintaining that shipping routes remain operational despite heightened security risks.

How has the conflict affected Gulf countries?

Several Gulf states reported Iranian attacks or interceptions of missiles and drones. Qatar confirmed injuries caused by falling debris, while the UAE, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and Oman reported missile or drone threats and damage linked to the latest escalation. Oman also summoned Iran’s ambassador to protest the attacks.

What is the impact on diplomacy and global energy markets?

The renewed hostilities have cast serious doubt on the interim US-Iran agreement reached last month, which sought to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for further negotiations. The continued disruption of one of the world’s busiest energy corridors has intensified concerns over global oil supplies, pushing energy prices higher and increasing pressure on international markets.
