Pakistan Warns Against ‘Weaponising Water’, Reaffirms Indus Waters Treaty

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has warned against the “weaponisation of water,” urging the international community to uphold international water-sharing agreements amid renewed concerns over the future of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).

Speaking at a seminar on the treaty’s role in promoting regional peace, senior Pakistani officials said shared water resources should remain a means of cooperation rather than political pressure, stressing that unilateral actions threaten regional stability.

Why did Pakistan issue the warning?

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said no country should use water as a political tool, describing the Indus Waters Treaty as a legally binding international agreement that cannot be suspended or terminated unilaterally.

He said Pakistan remains committed to the treaty and expects all parties to honour their international obligations.

What was discussed at the seminar?

The seminar, titled “Indus Waters Treaty: An Instrument of Peace and Regional Stability,” brought together policymakers, legal experts and water specialists to examine the treaty’s significance and the growing challenges facing transboundary water governance.

Participants highlighted the importance of preserving international agreements governing shared rivers amid increasing geopolitical tensions and climate-related pressures.

    What did Pakistani officials say?

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the treaty has remained in force despite decades of political disputes and conflicts, demonstrating its resilience as a framework for peaceful water sharing.

Officials maintained that any unilateral attempt to alter, suspend or disregard the treaty would undermine international law and set a concerning precedent for other transboundary river agreements.

What concerns were raised about regional water security?

Speakers warned that climate change, declining water availability and rising demand have intensified the need for cooperation over shared water resources.

They stressed that adherence to established legal mechanisms remains essential to preventing disputes and ensuring sustainable water management across the region.

    What is Pakistan’s position?

Pakistan reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank and signed in 1960, remains a valid and binding international agreement governing the distribution of the Indus river system.

Officials said respecting the treaty is essential for regional peace, stability and long-term cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
