India will attempt to become the first team to retain the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup when they face New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
More than 100,000 spectators are expected at the world’s largest cricket stadium as host nation India aim to defend the title they won in 2024, while New Zealand pursue their first global white-ball championship.
India, captained by Suryakumar Yadav, reached the final after defeating England in the semi-final and have remained one of the most consistent teams in international tournaments. Despite a campaign that has not been flawless, the hosts are now one victory away from lifting the trophy on home soil.
Top-order batter Sanju Samson has played a key role in India’s run to the final, delivering back-to-back match-winning performances. His promotion has strengthened the batting lineup, while India have also shown flexibility in reshaping their order during crucial moments of the tournament.
With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah has led India’s attack with disciplined bowling, supported by seam-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya. However, the team has faced concerns over extra deliveries, with Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube conceding wides and no-balls in the closing overs.
New Zealand’s journey to the final has also been challenging. The team secured a place in the knockout stage after other results went their way before producing a dominant nine-wicket victory over South Africa in the semi-final.
Openers Finn Allen and Tim Seifert have provided explosive starts for the Black Caps, while Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips have strengthened the middle order with aggressive batting.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said his side were prepared for the challenge of facing India in front of a large home crowd.
“It’s going to be a challenge where everyone knows we’re probably not the favourites, but we wouldn’t mind breaking a few hearts to lift the trophy,” Santner said.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged the pressure of playing a World Cup final at home but said the team was excited about the opportunity.
“Of course there are nerves, but if there is no pressure, there is no fun,” he said. “The whole team and the support staff are excited for the final.”
New Zealand, who lost the 2021 T20 World Cup final to Australia, are still seeking their first white-ball world title, while India aim to make history with back-to-back T20 World Cup victories.
