Hyderabad Kingsmen will aim to secure their maiden victory in the ongoing HBL Pakistan Super League when they take on Peshawar Zalmi at the National Bank Stadium on Wednesday, as the Karachi leg of the tournament begins. The Kingsmen, one of two new franchises in the expanded 11th edition, have endured a difficult start, losing all three of their opening matches and sitting at the bottom of the points table.
Peshawar Zalmi, in contrast, have played only two matches so far, winning one against Rawalpindi while their fixture against Islamabad United was abandoned due to rain. The team returns to action after nearly a week’s break, bringing fresh energy into the Karachi phase.
Hyderabad all-rounder Hassan Khan acknowledged the team’s slow start but emphasized a positive dressing room environment, stating that the squad has been training well and building cohesion both on and off the field. He expressed optimism that the team’s fortunes will improve in upcoming matches.
The Karachi leg will run until April 28, though matches at the National Bank Stadium will be played behind closed doors due to government-imposed austerity measures. The venue is known for being batting-friendly in T20 cricket, with typical first-innings scores ranging between 170 and 180, while dew and spin often influence second-innings conditions.
Hyderabad’s leadership has also drawn attention, with Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne captaining the side despite limited T20 leadership experience. Hassan Khan defended the decision, noting Labuschagne’s international experience and his familiarity with competitive cricket environments such as the Big Bash League, adding that the captain has now settled well within the squad.
The Kingsmen’s lineup features aggressive local talent including Sharjeel Khan and Maaz Sadaqat, supported by middle-order batters like Usman Khan and all-round options. However, their inconsistent performances in both batting and bowling have been a concern in the early stages of the tournament.
Peshawar Zalmi, on the other hand, bring a strong and balanced squad led by Babar Azam and Mohammad Haris at the top of the order, alongside power-hitters like Kusal Mendis and Abdul Samad. Babar, who holds an impressive record at the National Bank Stadium, will be a key figure in Zalmi’s batting approach.
Zalmi’s bowling unit, featuring spin options and death-over specialists, will look to counter Hyderabad’s batting strengths. As both sides prepare for the Karachi leg opener, Hyderabad will be under pressure to convert their improved team environment into results, while Zalmi will aim to build momentum with their first appearance after the break.
