Vietnam’s Sun PhuQuoc Airways Signs $22.5 Billion Deal for 40 Boeing Dreamliners

Vietnam’s Sun PhuQuoc Airways has signed a $22.5 billion agreement with Boeing Co. to purchase 40 Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner aircraft, the airline said on Thursday. The deal marks one of the largest wide‑body jet orders in Vietnamese aviation history and underscores the carrier’s ambitions to expand into intercontinental markets, including future routes between Vietnam and the United States.

The aircraft, featuring long‑range capabilities and advanced fuel efficiency, are intended to form the backbone of the airline’s wide‑body fleet, enabling non‑stop long‑haul flights to destinations across Asia, Europe and North America once deliveries begin.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways, a newly established carrier based on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island and backed by the Sun Group, currently operates a fleet of smaller aircraft on domestic and regional routes. The expanded fleet with Dreamliners is expected to support the airline’s broader strategy to become a major international player in global aviation.

The purchase deal was announced during high‑level engagements in Washington, D.C., where Vietnamese officials and Boeing representatives highlighted the strategic importance of boosting tourism linkages and economic ties between Vietnam and the United States.

Analysts say the order reflects rising demand for long‑distance travel from Southeast Asia and positions Vietnam as a growing hub in global aviation, even as competition heats up among carriers for new international routes.
