Great Britain Secures Historic One-Two Finish in European Men’s 100m Final

BIRMINGHAM: Great Britain claimed a memorable one-two finish in the men’s 100 metres at the European Athletics Championships, with Romell Glave winning the gold medal and Jeremiah Azu taking silver in front of a home crowd at Alexander Stadium.

Glave captured his first major international gold medal by clocking 10.09 seconds, upgrading the bronze medal he won at the 2024 European Championships in Rome. Azu crossed the finish line in 10.16 seconds to secure the silver medal, completing Britain’s first one-two finish in the event at the championships.

Germany’s Owen Ansah claimed the bronze medal after Italy’s defending champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs was forced to pull up midway through the race because of an injury.

The victory made Glave the sixth British athlete to win the European men’s 100m title and the third British champion in the past six editions, following James Dasaolu (2014) and Zharnel Hughes (2018).

What Does the Victory Mean for Britain’s Sprint Team?

The result came just one day after Amy Hunt won the women’s 100m title, underlining Great Britain’s strong performance in the sprint events at the championships.

Glave described the result as a dominant display for British athletics, saying the team had hoped to sweep all three podium places but was pleased to secure the top two positions.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season, winning his first British title in June and breaking the 10-second barrier under legal wind conditions for the first time in his career. His success follows years of injury setbacks, including a back fracture that disrupted his development.

Azu, the 2025 World and European indoor 60m champion, said he was pleased to return to the international podium after what he described as an inconsistent season. Despite missing out on gold, the 25-year-old said championship racing is about winning medals rather than chasing fast times.

Elsewhere at the championships, Matthew Hudson-Smith qualified for the men’s 400m final after finishing second in his semi-final, while Hannah Nuttall placed fifth in the women’s 5,000m. In the women’s 100m hurdles, the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser edged Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska by one thousandth of a second in a photo finish to claim the gold medal.
