Karachi witnessed record-breaking rainfall accompanied by strong winds, bringing an unusual winter-like chill to the city and causing widespread disruption. According to official data, the city received 38.7 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, surpassing a 41-year-old April record.
The previous record of 37mm, set in April 1985, was exceeded during the latest downpour, marking one of the most significant weather events for the city in recent decades. The rainfall led to a sharp drop in temperature, with the minimum recorded at 16°C, significantly below the usual April average, creating unseasonably cold conditions.
The recent rain spell turned deadly, with the death toll rising to seven over two days. Several fatalities were caused by electrocution incidents in different parts of the city, including Surjani Town, PIB Colony, and areas near MA Jinnah Road. In Gulistan-e-Jauhar, one person lost their life after coming into contact with a live electric source during the rain.
Structural damage was also reported. In Old Golimar, a wall collapse killed a rickshaw driver, while a separate incident in Orangi Town left three children injured after another wall fell. Rescue teams responded promptly, shifting the injured to nearby medical facilities.
The heavy rainfall caused urban flooding in low-lying areas, with locations such as Safoora Chowrangi and Hassan Square among the worst affected. Water accumulation on major roads led to severe traffic congestion, leaving commuters stranded for hours. The situation was further worsened by power outages, as multiple electricity feeders tripped, disrupting supply across several neighborhoods.
Rainfall intensity varied across the city, with Nazimabad recording the highest at 97.4mm. Other areas, including Surjani Town, Keamari, DHA, Orangi Town, and Jinnah Terminal, also received significant rainfall.
The impact of the weather system extended beyond Karachi, with other parts of Sindh, including Mohenjo-Daro, Jacobabad, Dadu, and Hyderabad, also receiving rainfall.
Authorities have initiated efforts to drain accumulated water and restore traffic flow, while emergency services remain on alert. Although the intensity of rainfall has reduced, light rain and drizzle may persist, with officials continuing to monitor the situation to prevent further damage and casualties.
