NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, describing Sharif as a “terrific” man and Pakistan as a “great country.”
Trump said Sharif had called him to thank him for the US role in helping end the conflict between Pakistan and India in May 2025.
“Pakistan is a great country. PM Shehbaz Sharif, a terrific man,” Trump said during his speech.
Trump Discusses Iran Conflict
Trump also focused on the conflict with Iran, saying his administration faced a choice between reaching a deal with Tehran or taking further military action.
He said he expected a deal with Iran after the November 3 US midterm elections and urged countries to increase economic pressure on Tehran.
Trump said the US military campaign had prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and warned that Iran could face further US action if an agreement was not reached.
US President Rejects International AI Oversight
Trump also rejected proposals for greater international supervision of artificial intelligence, criticizing what he described as efforts to establish global controls over the technology.
He said his administration would use the term “super intelligence” instead of artificial intelligence in its communications and dismissed warnings that AI could pose catastrophic risks.
During the address, Trump also criticized the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, Mexico and Cuba, while outlining his administration’s positions on international security and foreign policy.
