Amsterdam’s ‘Reading Raves’ Gain Popularity as Gen Z Embraces Digital Detox

AMSTERDAM: A growing digital detox movement is attracting large numbers of young people in Amsterdam, where “reading raves” are offering phone-free social gatherings as an alternative to constant online connectivity.

The trend centres on The Offline Club, an Amsterdam-based initiative that hosts events in cafés, churches, parks and other public venues where participants are encouraged to disconnect from smartphones and spend time reading, writing, playing board games or engaging in other analogue activities.

One of the movement’s most widely shared videos has attracted more than 42 million views on social media, showing around 250 participants gathered in a 400-year-old church in Amsterdam reading books without using mobile phones.

Organisers say the events are designed to provide a distraction-free environment where people can reconnect with books, conversation and creative activities away from digital devices.

Why Is the Digital Detox Trend Gaining Momentum?

The movement has gained particular popularity among Generation Z, a demographic often associated with high levels of smartphone and social media use.

Supporters say the events reflect a growing interest in reducing screen time and improving social interaction, as concerns increase over the effects of excessive digital engagement on mental wellbeing, attention spans and community connections.

The Offline Club offers participants access to books, board games, art materials and musical instruments while discouraging the use of phones and Wi-Fi during its gatherings.

The popularity of the initiative comes amid broader discussions about digital wellbeing, with researchers and technology experts increasingly examining the impact of smartphones and social media on social relationships and mental health.

As digital detox initiatives continue to expand across Europe, Amsterdam’s reading raves have emerged as one of the most visible examples of efforts to encourage offline social interaction in an increasingly connected world.
