Telegram Challenges Temporary Ban in India Over Exam Fraud Prevention Measures

NEW DELHI: Messaging platform Telegram has filed a petition in court challenging an Indian government order temporarily blocking access to the app, according to a report by legal news website Bar and Bench.

The restriction, which came into effect on Tuesday and is set to remain in place until June 22, was imposed as part of efforts to prevent alleged cheating in medical entrance examinations, including suspected use of online platforms to facilitate exam fraud.

According to the report, the legal challenge contests the government’s decision to restrict access to the platform during the enforcement period.

Telegram did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The move comes after Indian authorities last month cancelled a key undergraduate medical entrance examination following allegations of a question paper leak and related malpractice investigations.

Officials have said the temporary suspension is intended to curb the circulation of exam content and prevent further breaches while investigations continue.

The case is expected to be heard in court as regulatory scrutiny of digital platforms in India intensifies alongside concerns over exam security and data misuse.
