The United States military leadership underwent a sudden and high-profile change as Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth asked Army Chief of Staff General Randy A. George to step down and retire effective immediately, the Pentagon confirmed.
General George, the 41st Chief of Staff of the US Army, had been serving in the role since September 2023 and was expected to complete a four-year term. His abrupt departure comes without an official reason from the Pentagon, but defence sources indicate the move is part of a broader leadership reshuffle under Hegseth’s tenure.
In addition to General George’s retirement, two other senior Army officers, Gen. David Hodne of the Army’s Transformation and Training Command and Maj. Gen. William Green, head of the Army Chaplain Corps — were also removed from their positions.
An acting replacement, General Christopher LaNeve, has been named to lead the Army staff while a permanent successor is selected. LaNeve previously served as a senior aide within the Department of Defence.
The shake-up marks one of the most significant leadership changes in the US military in recent months, occurring amid ongoing US military engagement overseas. Hegseth’s period as defence secretary has seen a series of dismissals and retirements of top military commanders, reflecting a shift in the Pentagon’s leadership structure.
No official explanation has been provided for the removal of General George and the other officers, and senior Pentagon officials have declined to comment publicly on the motivations behind the decision.
