Pakistan Face Sri Lanka in Must-Win T20 World Cup Clash

Pakistan face a crucial must-win Super Eight match against Sri Lanka today in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive. The match is being played in Pallekele/Kandy in Sri Lanka. Pakistan must secure a large victory, either beating Sri Lanka by a big margin if batting first or chasing the target quickly, to overtake New Zealand on net run rate and clinch a place in the last four.

Official reports outline a tough equation: Pakistan need to beat Sri Lanka by about 65–70 runs if they bat first, or chase the target within roughly 13 overs if batting second, to stay ahead on net run rate and qualify. A narrow win may not be sufficient due to their current net run rate deficit.

In other Super Eight action, England beat New Zealand, which keeps Pakistan’s semifinal hopes alive. England’s victory has complicated the race, as it means Pakistan must now win big to eclipse New Zealand’s points and rate.

Cricket analysts note that Pakistan’s path to the semis is narrow: they must not only beat Sri Lanka convincingly but also hope that net run rate works in their favour, a scenario that means they could still fall short even with a win if it isn’t dominant.
