A mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge has left nine people dead and at least 27 others injured, in one of the deadliest school attacks in recent Canadian history. The violence began on February 10 at a private residence before moving to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, authorities said.
Police identified the suspect as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, a local resident. Investigators said the suspect fatally shot two family members at a nearby home before entering the school and opening fire. A teacher and five students, aged 12 to 13, were killed at the school. The suspect later died from what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers responded swiftly, secured the area and evacuated students and staff. Emergency crews transported dozens of injured victims to hospitals, with several reported in serious condition. Police stated that the suspect is believed to have acted alone, and the motive remains under investigation.
Prime Minister Mark Carney described the attack as “horrific” and extended condolences to the victims’ families. He postponed planned travel, ordered flags on federal buildings lowered to half-mast and dispatched the federal public safety minister to the community. Leaders across Canada and abroad also expressed sympathy as the country grapples with the rare but devastating act of school violence.
