Deadly Violence Continues in Gaza and West Bank as Tensions Persist

Violence linked to the ongoing Israel–Hamas war continued this week, with fresh clashes, civilian casualties and heightened political tensions across the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, according to multiple news sources and conflict monitors.

In Gaza, recent days have seen renewed Israeli military activity. Israeli forces conducted air and drone strikes in several parts of the enclave despite a ceasefire agreement that has been in place since October 2025. A drone strike in Deir al-Balah killed two cyclists, while gunfire in the Maghazi refugee camp fatally wounded a woman, raising the overall Palestinian death toll to over 72,000 since the conflict began, health officials reported. Indonesia is reportedly training thousands of troops for a planned international peacekeeping force intended to support reconstruction and humanitarian efforts, though key elements of broader peace plans remain unresolved.

In the occupied West Bank, the Israeli government has moved forward with expanded administrative and security powers that critics say undermine the possibility of a future Palestinian state. Measures include easing land acquisition restrictions for Israeli settlers and extending Israeli civil authority over areas previously governed under Palestinian jurisdiction. These steps have been condemned by Palestinians, rights groups and several Arab nations as actions tantamount to further annexation of the territory.

Humanitarian conditions remain dire. United Nations agencies report rising displacement across multiple West Bank communities due to settler violence and demolitions, with hundreds of Palestinians forced from their homes in recent weeks. In Gaza, residents continue to make urgent appeals for expanded access to essential supplies and relief through border crossings that have been intermittently restricted.

The conflict, which erupted on 7 October 2023 after militants from Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing more than 1,200 people and taking hostages, has since involved repeated cycles of fighting, ceasefires, and international diplomatic efforts. Despite a partial ceasefire agreement reached in October 2025 that led to hostage releases and limited pauses in fighting, periodic escalations have continued through early 2026.

Regional and international diplomacy remains active. Draft peace proposals circulating among U.S. and allied mediators reportedly envisage staged disarmament for Hamas alongside humanitarian and governance arrangements for Gaza, though specifics and implementation timelines are not yet firm. Israeli leaders say full disarmament of militant groups is a precondition for sustained peace and reconstruction.

The widening dynamics of conflict have also affected West Bank governance and settlement policy, heightening fears among Palestinians and some international observers that long-term political solutions remain elusive amid ongoing military, diplomatic and territorial disputes.
