Grammy CEO Responds After BTS Announces Boycott of 2027 Awards

LOS ANGELES: Recording Academy Chief Executive Officer Harvey Mason Jr. has responded after K-pop group BTS announced it would not participate in the 2027 Grammy Awards, saying he respects the band’s decision while defending the introduction of the academy’s new Asian Pop category.

In a statement released following BTS’s announcement, Mason said he was disappointed by the group’s decision but emphasized that the Recording Academy remained committed to recognizing artists from across Asia.

What Did the Grammy CEO Say?

“I am saddened to hear that BTS has chosen not to participate in the Grammy Awards process this year, but as a music creator, I understand and respect their decision,” Mason said.

He also addressed criticism surrounding the Recording Academy’s decision to introduce an Asian Pop category.

“I do want to clarify something that seems to be getting lost in the conversation,” he said.

“The Asian Pop category was created to celebrate the depth, diversity and extraordinary growth of pop artistry coming out of Asia. The spirit of this new category is to shine a dedicated spotlight on these important artists. More categories mean more artists’ work is recognised.”

Why Is BTS Boycotting the Grammys?

BTS announced earlier that the group would not participate in the 2027 Grammy Awards, a decision that sparked widespread discussion among fans and the music industry.

The group’s announcement followed debate over the Recording Academy’s introduction of the new Asian Pop category, with critics arguing the move could separate Asian artists from the main pop competition.

Neither BTS nor the Recording Academy has indicated any change in their positions following Mason’s statement.

The 2027 Grammy Awards are expected to proceed as scheduled.
