DOHA: Qatar’s former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who transformed the Gulf state into a major diplomatic, energy and media power during his 18-year reign, died on Sunday at the age of 74, the country’s Amiri Diwan announced.
In a statement, the Amiri Diwan confirmed the death of the former ruler and paid tribute to his contributions to Qatar, praying for mercy upon his soul.
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, before voluntarily handing power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Who was Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani?
Sheikh Hamad is widely credited with overseeing Qatar’s rapid transformation into one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and expanding its influence in regional and international affairs.
During his reign, Qatar strengthened its diplomatic role, expanded its global investments and increased its international profile through the launch and growth of the Al Jazeera Media Network.
His leadership also saw Qatar successfully secure the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the first edition of the tournament held in the Middle East.
How did Pakistan react?
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences over the former emir’s death, describing him as a visionary leader whose leadership transformed Qatar into a modern and prosperous nation.
In a post on X, the prime minister said Sheikh Hamad’s contributions to Qatar’s development, regional peace and international cooperation would be remembered for generations.
He also recalled the late leader’s close ties with Pakistan and his numerous visits to the country, extending condolences to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family, the government and the people of Qatar.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also expressed grief over Sheikh Hamad’s passing.
In a separate statement on X, Dar said the former emir played a key role in Qatar’s modern development and helped strengthen bilateral relations between Pakistan and Qatar.
He extended condolences to Qatar’s leadership and prayed for the departed leader.
