Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout on Monday to advance to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after their Round of 32 match ended 1-1 following extra time.
Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty after goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s spot kick.
How Did Morocco Force Extra Time?
The Netherlands took the lead in the 72nd minute through Cody Gakpo before Issa Diop equalised with a stoppage-time header to send the match into extra time.
Neither side scored during the additional 30 minutes, taking the contest to penalties. Morocco progressed after the Dutch missed two spot kicks, while Saibari converted the winning penalty.
Morocco will face co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16 on Saturday in Houston.
