United States: Mackenzie Shirilla, the Ohio woman convicted in 2023 of murdering her boyfriend and his friend in a deadly car crash, said in a jailhouse phone call that she wanted media personality and legal advocate Kim Kardashian to represent her.
According to an undated call log obtained by PEOPLE, Shirilla told another speaker while detained at the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center, “I want Kim Kardashian to be my lawyer.”
During the conversation, Shirilla and the other caller discussed media attention surrounding her case, including interviews given by the father of one of the victims, and speculated that Kardashian might eventually notice the case.
Shirilla also said, “Tell her I buy all her SKIMS and I only wear SKIMS,” referring to Kardashian’s clothing brand SKIMS.
Kardashian, who passed California’s “baby bar” examination in 2022, has become involved in several criminal justice and clemency campaigns in recent years, advocating for inmates she believes were wrongly convicted or excessively sentenced.
Shirilla, now 20, is serving two concurrent prison sentences of 15 years to life at the Ohio Reformatory for Women.
Prosecutors said Shirilla intentionally drove her vehicle at high speed into a brick wall in Strongsville, Ohio, in July 2022, killing Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19.
In 2023, a judge convicted Shirilla of murder, ruling that the crash was deliberate.
Shirilla has continued to deny intentional wrongdoing. In the Netflix documentary The Crash, she said, “There was no intent whatsoever there.”
